Double Camping Chairs

Overview

One of the newer types of camping chair, double or tandem chairs have become available. Sold in a variety of styles, you typically see them with either an armrest separating the two chairs, or without an armrest, like a loveseat. Great for couples who want to be closer together as they sit by the fire, others may find their bulk and inflexibility a challenge.

Benefits

There is nothing more romantic than sitting in front of a roaring fire in the middle of the great outdoors holding your loved one’s hand. Double camping chairs fulfill this dream in an elegant and compact way. One of the newer varieties of folding camping chairs, double camp chairs allow you to be closer to your sweetie while getting closer to nature.

Often double camping chairs have built-in tables between the two chairs. Or, if there is no armrest between the chairs, they have side pockets and built in beverage holders.

Double chairs also offer a bit more room if one person wants to stretch out sideways.

Most double camping chairs are folding camp chairs and have a carrying case included.

Drawbacks

Double camping chairs weigh more – usually well over 20lbs. Since the two chairs are tethered together they aren’t as convenient – where one goes, the other must follow. They are more difficult to pack since they are larger and bulkier. There are also fewer types of double camp chairs on the market, which means finding the right one with the features you have in mind will be more difficult. Loveseat type double chairs in particular are difficult to find. If the two people sharing the chair are different heights and substantially different weights, the experience may not be as great as having separate chairs.

Cost

On average, double camping chairs run $40-$80 depending on features, brand and retailer.

Summary

Carefully look at how you intend to use your camping chairs. Do you need to have your seats anchored together, or would it make more sense to buy a pair of matching single chairs? Double chairs look great and feel more cozy, but their added weight, bulk and inconvenience makes them difficult to recommend.
